About

Hi, I’m Susan—abstract artist, animal lover and rescue dog mom living in Brooklyn, NY.

Growing up I was always obsessed with arts & crafts and took courses throughout grade school in North Carolina exploring a variety of techniques. I didn't start painting on my own until college when I desperately wanted to decorate my first dorm room. Since then my style and focus have continued to evolve, usually erring towards abstract expressionism and at times impressionistic.

Wherever life takes me I am constantly taking in my surroundings—focusing on the colors, sense of space and my own emotions to draw inspiration. I'm particularly fascinated by the ocean, vast landscapes, old textured layers of paint on buildings and unique bark patterns on trees. I concentrate on finding the right mix of texture, color and balance in my work, most often aiming to bring a sense of calm, peace or a splash of energy to an interior space.

I find a sense of freedom when painting—trusting in what I know and what I’ve learned, yet at times taking risks to try new things and letting the work and how I feel lead the way. Sometimes I have an idea of what I want to paint when I get started, other times I simply start painting and see where it takes me.
